AOF 15 Recap and Fight Results

More often than not, regional and local MMA events will have one or two exciting fights and the rest wil be mediocre at best. This past Friday night, however at AOF 15 was not the case. All eleven fights were jam packed with no holds barred action. Only one out of the eleven fights went to a decision but and that fight was a full on war. There is something to be said when all but one fight ends in either a submission, TKO or KO. (AOF 15 fight photos)

There were two fights that one could possibly argue were early stoppages. John Mahlow vs Charles Bennett was the first. Just past the half way mark of round one, Malow playing a high guard and his legs in the triangle catch position was working to getting his legs fully locked in. Bennett was having none of that when he picked up Mahlow and slammed him on his head with such force I thought Mahlow had went through the floor of the cage. If had been done on concrete Mahlow's head would have exploded. It just about knocked Mahlow out. Bennett easily moved to side control and the ground n pound ensued. Mahlow rolled to his side then on to his stomach as Bennett's right hand continued to hammer away at Mahlows head. Mahlow was able to get up to his hands and knees but was unable to protect himself from the onslaught of Bennett’s punches. The ref jumped in and stopped the bout at 3:27 seconds of round one. The ref probably could have let it go on for a few more seconds but that wouldn't have been enough time for Mahlow to escape Bennett's fury.

The second case was with main event David Yost vs Boban Simic. Both Yost an Simic came out fast and hard. After Simic landed a hard right and a left to Yost's face, Yost who definitely felt Simic's power was not deterred and moved forward throwing his own combination of punches. Simic fell to the canvas on both knees supporting himself with his hands. Yost moved in for the kill, but after just a few punches the ref called it. It was hard to see from my angle as both Yost's and Simic’s backs were facing me, but I was not alone in thinking that the ref had called it too soon.

At this point I probably shouldn’t leave out a ref's call that leaned way towards the other end of the spectrum with the late stoppage of the Josh Montoro vs John Davis match. With about 30 seconds left in the first round Davis sunk in a tight Von Flue triangle choke. There was no movement from Montoro and fans near the cage began yelling at the ref, “he’s out… he’s out!” Finally, after about a 7 or 8 seconds the ref stopped the fight. Montoro was definitely out and had been out for a while.

I always look forward to your intelligently written articles. I agree with the late stoppage, it is a face pace sport and the refs need to be even faster. I think that this is why there are so many early stoppages in pro fights. Early stoppages in amateur, while they are annoying, does not have as bad of an impact on the fighter as the amateur record is null and void once the fighter becomes pro. However it really sucks when you are told you will get a standing eight count and you do not get it :)
