strength or technique
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:02:52 PM »

When rolling with a training partner of weaker strength will I be hurting myself in the long run if I rely too much on my strength and not technique?

When you're training you should always try to work the technique rather than rely on strength. You might not succeed as much when you first start working a specific technique, but you'll progress much quicker.

What you're saying is when training hold back on using my strength as an advantage to getting the submission because my technique will half ass and will take longer to progress. How do I balance between the 2? What are the signs to look for where I can say to myself ok back off you're using to much muscle your form isn't right?

I agree. Try your best to look for the leverage (positional) power vs. the muscle power. When you rely too much on muscle strength you are compensating for a lack of position. Position is power. Keep moving to find the right position. When you find it you'll feel that it takes much less effort. Don't worry about balancing the two. Worry about trying to relax more, moving your center/core more and finding the right position. It'll pay off in the end.

It's impossible to not use some strength at the beginning. If ur grunting... that's a bad sign. It'll take a while, but just strive to be more and more relaxed when you roll.

"Position is power" and "...grunting...." "relax". I can see now exactly what you guys are saying. Problem solved. Thanks!

Everyone had great points,it's a tough thing to learn how to balance brute force and great technique,i've takken bjj for almost 6 years now and i still catch myself from time to time getting frustrated and "powering through" some techniques just to get wrist control or top position, now granted it works but like you were guessing and others confirmed you sacrifice some technique for this and in the long run that's not what your goal is. For me good solid bjj form comes from staying calm relaxed and thinking two steps ahead of whom your rolling/sparring with.
