Rolled at the "Clash" today
« on: September 11, 2010, 08:07:09 PM »

and had a great time.  It was pretty small, so everyone 16 and older just rolled round robin style.  For the gi portion it was at first just my instructor Kris and I, but then one of the organizers threw his gi on (turns out he is a blue belt), so we all three rolled against each other.  Don't remember who the third guys name (sorry) but he and I started things off and I ended up catching him in a kneebar.  I was really excited as I have only put me gi on a total of about 7 or 8 times and he was a blue belt!  In his defense he missed the rules meeting and said after he wasn't even thinking of defending against it as he didn't think it was legal.  Kris also won his first gi match, so that meant he and I were up next.  Kris (again my instructor) just earned, and received his blue belt from Royce Gracie, so for really the only time all day, I was really nervous.  We got going and ended up in some really bad situations (one of them beaing a full mount by Kris), but I tried to stay cool and ended up working through them.  I ended up hitting a few transitions and soring some points.  But the bell sounded and as soon as I got up I saw that Kris had won...by 1 (one) point!!!  Score was 7-6, and even though I lost I was so excited!  My third gi match (and again only put it on a couple of times) against someone I really admire, respect, look up to, etc. who is better and more experienced than me and I took him the distance and was only down 1 point in the end!!!  The more I think about it, the more I think that might have been my favorite match in tourny competition so far!!!
Of course after that the no-gi adults/ and teens went.  The organizers set it up so everyone would get at least 3 matches (but one of the guys left early so the rest of us got exactely 3 apiece).  I had 2 submissions, but it was the second that I was really proud of.  Yes I was bigger than my opponent (believe his name was John), but he was really strong, seemed to have a good wrestling base and when we started going found out he had great hips and movement from the bottom.  He knew how much bigger I was as we had talked about it during sign ups, so it suprised me when he pulled guard at first.  But we started working and he almost got me in a go-go plata, (but I drill that on my own so I saw it coming, still sucks having someones foot and hand clamped on your face).  After a couple of minutes I was able to pull guard and started working my gameplan.  He then postured up and let me setup a calf cutter from my back.  Once I locked it and rolled him over onto his belly he tapped.  As we got up, he said if I adjusted it anymore (which I was doing while also going for a rear choke) his leg would been in danger so he tapped before that happened.  The great part was when we got up, everyone there was asking:  "What the hell was that?"  All the mat judge could say, was that was just an akward position.  His eyes got big when I told him no it was an actual submission.  Picked it up at the Eric Paulson seminar couple months ago and fell in love with it, so thank you Sensei Paulson!!!
Finished up with my 3rd no-gi match (5th on the mat day) and before it, I was exhausted.  Against anyone else I woulda tossed in the towel (I felt I had nothing left to prove).  But I was going against my training partner Robby who was at his first tournament and had 2 submission losses on the day.  I felt I owed him the match.  I know that he was in his first tourny and against his first 2 guys he was really nervous and made a few mistakes that cost him his matches.  Against me however, he came looking a little pieced and ready to whoop my butt!!!  We started and several of things that we tried to coach him on earlier, and things I showed him when we had rolled before, he was using against me!  It didn't take long  ebfore he takes me down and we start to work.  I started working my rubber guard and got sloppy, and Robby sits back and ended up catching me in a straight ankle lock!  He had it higher on my calf, but it was fully extended and I couldn't get out so I tapped...sucks but in the end Robby earned his first tourny win.  Earned it and definetly deserved it.
We also had one of the kids show up and win both his matches by rear-naked chokes.
So at the end of the day Camden Combatives had a real good showing at Clash.  Four guys from CC  went a combined 7 wins (6 by submission) and 4 losses (3 by sub), 2 of which were to guys from our own school.  Can't speak for the other 4 but it really seems like we all take home something special from this event.
Next up BJJ Open Oc 2nd.  Camden Comabtives whould be there in force!!!

Can't find the info on it now, but it was by Micheal Lee's Dojo, and held at a church on Baymeadows road, (a very large church in experience).  The event was centered around the traditional martial arts, waepons and forms and so on.  The grappling portion wasn't advertized well (and heard a couple of the guys talking to one of the organizers about that fact afterwards), but we had enough people so that everyone got to roll in a tourny atmosphere.  My buddy Robby got a pretty good primer for Oct 2.  Can't wait to see him work between now and then.  He should do well then.
